Better Live: practical tools for a more sustainable live music sector

EMEE is pleased to highlight the launch of the new Better Live learning platform, a free online resource designed to support the ecological transition of the live music sector.

Better Live is a European cooperation project bringing together eleven partners from across the jazz and improvised music community. Running from 2022 to 2026, the project explores how live music can become more sustainable, fair and inclusive, with a particular focus on low-carbon touring, sustainable concerts, research, advocacy and professional training.

At the heart of the project is a simple but urgent question: how can the live music sector continue to connect artists, audiences and communities while reducing its environmental impact?

The newly launched Better Live learning platform offers practical support for music professionals who want to better understand the challenges and take meaningful action. Designed for musicians, venues, festivals, producers, booking agents, technicians, educators, students and other live music professionals, the platform includes:

  • 15 thematic learning paths covering key sustainability topics
  • Courses on mobility, carbon footprint, energy, waste, sustainable food, buildings, music and ecology, and more
  • Practical tools, educational resources, recent studies and real-world examples
  • Quizzes and structured learning materials
  • Content available in English, French, Spanish and German

The platform has been developed by Better Live with pedagogical direction from Gwendolenn Sharp / The Green Room, and contributions from European experts working across music, sustainability, touring, research and cultural policy.

For EMEE and its members, Better Live offers a valuable resource for music export offices and the wider European music ecosystem. International mobility is essential to music export, but it also brings important environmental questions. This platform can help artists, managers, venues, festivals, export offices and other professionals think more strategically about touring, audience travel, carbon impact and practical sustainability measures.

Whether you are looking to build a lower-carbon tour, better understand audience mobility, rethink your organisation’s environmental practices, or simply start learning where the biggest impacts lie, the Better Live platform is a strong starting point.
